The Lambda Calculus

The lambda calculus was developed by Alonzo Church in 1941 to investigate computability.

This development precedes the development of all programming languages.

Church's idea was a true calculus of functions.

The notion of function was defined as a rule for computing a value, given a argument.

Every expression was to denote a function and the calculus investigated how functions could be computed from each other.
